Imaging photography in the post-media condition
After the digital revolution and ten years after Lev Manovich stated that photography is a database of information rather than a frozen evidence of something that once took place in front of the lens, one can question what is left of photography, if it is relevant or even interesting to distinguish it from any other means of image production. I will approach this complex question from two rather different angles, on the hand from a few (artistic) images and on the other, from the multitude of online image databases and the applications connected to them. I will argue that there are reasons for thinking in terms of “photography” in the post-media condition, but that any medium must be understood in relation both to its past and to how we imagine its future.
